City growth is a balancing act

A reading guide to growth, city ratings and the questions a future experiment should answer.

OFFICIAL INFORMATION · PRE-RELEASE

The tycoon blog describes 18 settlement growth levels. Passenger transport and goods deliveries earn growth experience; six ratings influence its effectiveness: reputation, satisfaction, delivery, traffic, noise and pollution. Municipal areas extend beyond the built-up city. Difficulty and individual mechanics can be adjusted, with sandbox options for freer construction.

Separate the objective from the indicator

Before changing a network, decide what you want to improve: a particular rating, a town’s growth, or the transport service itself. Those are different observations. Record the relevant baseline so a later increase is not automatically attributed to the last thing you built.

Editorial perspective

A city is a good place to use a one-change experiment. Pick one bottleneck, state what you expect to happen, then observe both the intended result and any side effects. This is a way to learn the system rather than a claim about an optimal strategy. The published overview does not substitute for measurements from a specific map.

A reusable observation sheet

Note the town, date, difficulty settings, change made and observation period. Record the six ratings before and after, alongside the growth result. If you changed simulation settings or added several services, flag that in your notes. Comparisons between different configurations need that context. Our coverage does not claim a tested maximum-growth layout, and we have not independently validated the release build’s balancing.

A note on evidence
